Add UTM Params and Shorten Link (Quick Bar)

For marketers and content creators, apply your UTM parameters and get a shortened link copied to your clipboard! Activate from the PixieBrix Quick Bar

How to Use

If you're a marketer or content creator, you probably want to know how effectively you drive traffic to a piece of content. To do that, you'll use UTM parameters and append those to a link that you share so Google Analytics (and other analytics tools) can credit you for the traffic to that link!

Admittedly, it's annoying to remember to add parameters (a long string of symbols like & and = with other characters) to the end of your link. And even then, it ends up being quite long.

To solve this, I made this that copies the current page's link, appends parameters, shortens the link, and then adds it to your clipboard, so you can reference it wherever you want!

Bricks Used

  • Quick Bar Trigger
  • Shorten Long URLs (with Rebrandly)
  • Show Confetti 🎉

Activate the Blueprint

  1. Activate this . If you're not logged into PixieBrix or have not previously created a PixieBrix account, you'll be prompted to do so before continuing the activation flow for this .

  2. Once logged in, you'll need to configure a few quick things to get this up and running.

    • Start by adding the parameters you want to add to the end of a URL. It will look something like this ?utm_source=creator&utm_medium=unpaid-social&utm_campaign=P:all|O:community|F:awareness|C:ptour|W:bjoiner|H:fy23-jan-june|I:atlassian-creators|L:en|

    • Next, you'll need to configure your Rebrandly integration for link shortening. (Don't worry - it's easy!) Click "Configure" to get started.

    • Name the configuration anything you like. To get the API, create an account on Rebrandly, and then go to the API settings and click "generate new API key".

    • Copy that value, and you'll paste that into the key field in the PixieBrix integration modal. Then click "save," and you're ready to click activate!

  3. This uses the Quick Bar command to trigger the action, so make sure you have your Quick Bar keyboard shortcut configured in Chrome. To do this, go to chrome://extensions/ and select "keyboard shortcuts" on the left, then set the Toggle Quick Bar shortcut to anything you like. (CMD/CTRL + K is a common one.)

Try it Out

  1. From any page, open the Quick Bar with your configured shortcut. Search for the action by typing a few letters or use the arrows to select it from the options listed.

  2. A window alert will show the new link and let you know it's been copied to your clipboard! There's no action you need to take. You can press "enter" to close the modal.

  3. Now, you'll see a spray of confetti, and you can paste your shortened link anywhere you like.

  4. You can confirm it has the appropriate parameters by visiting the link to see the full link unfurled with your parameters.

Endless Possibilities

This is just the beginning! Once you activate your , the possibilities are endless. For example, you could create a form with different dropdowns that let you select different parameters based on the channel you're on or customizes some other aspect of it.

With PixieBrix, you can customize any to meet your needs or even build something entirely new. If you run into any trouble, need some friendly support, or want to share your creations with the world, join our PixieBrix Slack Community.
